Oct. 17, 2025, Nigeria: AfAW’s roundtable on ‘Witchcraft Accusations and Human Rights Abuses against Women & Children in Bauchi State’

The Dr. Leo Igwe-led Advocacy for Alleged Witches (AfAW) will organise a roundtable discussion titled ‘Witchcraft Accusations and Human Rights Abuses against Women and Children in Bauchi State’ on October 17, 2025 in Nigeria.

Free and open to the public, the event will take place in Bauchi State’s southern town of Tafawa Balewa, specifically in its Local Government Area (LGA).

Starting at 9 AM, the discussion will explore the beliefs and practices that generate accusations of witchcraft—specifically as directed against women and children—and the abuses that tend to accompany them.

AfAW has circulated the following digital poster to advertise this event:

Notably, Dr. Igwe has faced trouble from Facebook (ironically) for making posts exposing the abuses perpetrated by witchcraft accusers and similar irrationalists. His Facebook account was disabled by Meta (which owns Facebook) on January 13 this year ; it was restored after an online petition began to catch steam. However, the account was again disabled on August 21 and remains so. A new online petition is likely to be launched later this week to get Dr. Igwe’s Facebook account restored again.

In organising the upcoming event, AfAW has the support of the Bauchi branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria.

Founded on August 4, 1944, in Mexico City, Mexico, FIDA held its first convention in 1945 in Havana, Cuba, according to its website.
