September 2, 2026: South Africa-based Lebanese psychologist to speak on ‘psychoanalysis’ for collective liberation

Dr. Lara Sheehi—a Research Fellow at the University of South Africa's Institute for Social and Health Sciences—will discuss her recently published book, From the clinic to the streets: psychoanalysis for revolutionary futures (Pluto Press: May 2026), on September 2, 2026. While the talk is expected to be comprehensively informed by the oppressive turmoil in the Middle East, especially Palestine, its overarching scope is the author’s aspirations regarding the potentially liberatory and socially healing role of psychoanalysis.

Organised by the Tech for Palestine Book Club, the event will be hosted by Tom Hall, the Director of Incubation at the San Francisco-based Tech for Palestine (T4P); the event will include a Question-and-Answer (Q&A) session.

On Wednesday, September 2, the event will start at 12 PM Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), which is 6 PM South Africa Standard Time (SAST); 7 PM Eastern European Summer Time (EEST) & Israel Daylight Time (IDT); 8 PM Mauritius Time/UAE/Oman; and 9: 30 PM Indian Standard Time (IST).

Dr. Lara Sheehi has also co-authored, with Dr. Stephen Sheehi, another book titled Psychoanalysis under occupation (Routledge: January 2023).

It may be noted that in January 2023, a large number of Dr. Sheehi’s colleagues with a Jewish background wrote a letter supporting her within the context of accusations of anti-Semitism against her at the George Washington University, where she was employed at the time. An independent legal review of the accusations had cleared her of any wrongdoing in March 2023.
