by Piyush Mathur
The South Africa-based Research ICT Africa (RIA) will soon be holding a conference in Johannesburg on the prospects for fair governance of Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially in Africa. Titled 2026 Just AI Conference: Grounding AI Governance in Justice, this event will take place on March 30-31, 2026.

The venue for the conference is the University of Pretoria’s Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS). There is no indication yet on the relevant channels or websites that this event is open to the public. Aimed at researchers, policy makers, academics, administrators, executives, and (perhaps) AI-focussed journalists, this conference seems like an invitation-only event.
Those not invited to the event may wish to contact RIA for a possible opportunity to attend; alternatively, they could watch the sessions live on RIA’s YouTube channel:

The conference proceedings would also be released as a volume within 2 months.
Thoughtfox has obtained the full programme of the conference, and it can be downloaded in the Portable Document Format (PDF) via this link.
While convened by RIA, this event is funded by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC/CRDI), and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
RIA, a non-profit think tank, is headquartered at the Victoria & Alfred (V&A) Waterfront in Cape Town.
