September 13, 2025 (Port Harcourt): Talk on ‘ritual’ money
by Dr. Piyush Mathur
On September 13, 2025, Dr. Leo Igwe’s organisation Advocacy for Alleged Witches (AfAW) will hold an open-access public discussion in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, on claims and practices associated with the belief that witchcraft, black magic, and/or allegedly spiritual rituals can make a person rich. These claims have been circulated across the world since time immemorial; they have also been used online to dupe people. These types of claims have a significant hold on the popular imagination in many parts of Africa, especially in the Sub-Saharan region (including Nigeria).
The event would engage the public and any stakeholders on the dynamics of these types of claims and practices—and the assumptions underpinning them; it would also shine a light on the victimisation that results from them.
Dr. Igwe is also likely to address briefly the recently circulated video footage of a pastor, Joseph Ifediorah (from Rivers State), ritualistically whipping around 25 very young naked children as part of an alleged exorcism exercise.
The event would start on Saturday, September 13, at 12:00 noon at the Stinson Hotel, No. 2/3 Hosannah Close, off Adageorge Road, Opposite Omega Clinic Road—in Port Harcourt.
