Dr. Atsuko Ichijo’s recent publication, Nationalism and Subjectivity: East Asian Experiences (Oxford University Press, 2025), will be launched at Birbeck Central, Room 209, on February 20, 2026. This is a hybrid event; it will start at 6 PM and end at 8 PM (GMT/UTC).

From the available descriptions of the book, it seems that it presents Dr. Ichijo’s findings regarding what East Asian experiences tell us about the notion and concept of ‘nationalism’ and people’s sense of self.

While the overall regional scope of the book is not clear from its summary descriptions, ‘East Asia’ tends to include the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Mongolia, the Republic of China (Taiwan), Nippon, North Korea, and South Korea. (With the recent re-election of Nippon’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi—often described as an ultra-nationalist—Dr. Ichijo’s book may have an added interest for global political observers.)

The launch is organised by the Institute for Crime and Justice Policy Research (ICPR), the Department of Politics of Birkbeck, University of London, and the Association for the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism (ASEN). Dr. Ichijo is an Honorary Research Fellow at the ICPR.

For some directly relevant online participants internationally, this might be a useful bit: The starting time will fall on February 21 at 2:00 AM in the PRC, Mongolia, and ROC; and 3:00 AM in Nippon, North Korea, and South Korea.

For Egypt, the event will start on February 20 at 8 PM; for Mauritius,10 PM; and for India, 11:30 PM, the same day.

The event will see presentations from Drs. David Cole, Mai Sato, Jason Edwards, and John Hutchinson, aside from Dr. Ichijo herself.
