July 27, 2026 (Nigeria): Free ‘Metrics and Manipulation’ presentation

by Piyush Mathur

As part of its ‘Learn & Launch Series’, AI Safety Nigeria (AISN) will organise a three-hour in-person presentation titled ‘Metrics and Manipulation: Preventing Reward Hacking in Fragile Economies’ on July 27, 2026, in Abuja, Nigeria. The series consists of monthly presentations on Africa’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) safety needs and related issues.

This purposefully interactive event will take place between 10 AM and 1 PM (WAT) on Monday, July 27, at the American Corner, FCT Public Library—which is next to Prince Ebeano Supermarket, Wuse Zone 4, Abuja. The exact spot is 2 Gwani Street.

One can attend this presentation for free; however, the seats are limited and prior registration is required via the following link, which also provides a quick agenda for the event:

This is AI Safety Nigeria's digital poster for its July 2026 event in Abuja. The text is mostly in green on a white background; one area has a green background with white text. Top left is AISN's logo and name, in green; the logo shows a Africa map

Please note that the form to be filled there is not terribly short or superficial. So, do not leave it to be filled out at the last moment.

Also, check out the fuller details on this presentation at this link: https://lls.aisafetynigeria.com/abuja-july-edition/

It may surprise you, but that page also lists three texts related to the presentation’s topic—and you will get digital copies of those after you register. That’s not all. The organisers have also included the following instruction there: ‘Bring one example of a metric that shapes decisions in your field.’

Quite obviously, this is going to be a substantive event, and it is rather neatly structured to enable the attendees to conceptually frame the issue, take a deep dive into selected cases; discuss ‘safeguards suitable for resource-constrained environments’; and network with other attendees. The event, per AISN’s extremely elegant webpage, will follow four clear stages to accomplish the above.

As for your fellow attendees, they will include policymakers, regulators, civil society actors, health and ‘development’ professionals, researchers, academics, engineers, and technology designers.

Background

AISN is a non-profit organisation that has a variety of funding sources; its bigger backers include the US-based Google.org and the Switzerland-based Digital Policy Alert (DPA).

AISN claims to be committed to encouraging the development of safe and ethical AI infrastructure in Nigeria and Africa.
